The following links and resources include information as it relates to long-term care and long-term care insurance.

AARP
AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people age 50 and over. They deliver value to their members through information, advocacy and service with dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all as they age.

The American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA)
This national non-profit organization represents 5,000 not-for-profit nursing homes, continuing care retirement communities, assisted living residences and senior housing facilities and community service organizations for the elderly.

American Health Care Association (AHCA)
AHCA is a federation of 50 state health organizations. They represent nearly 12,000 non-profit and for-profit assisted living, nursing facility, long term care, and sub-acute care providers who care for more than one million elderly and disabled individuals nationally.

America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP)
This national association represents nearly 1,300 member companies providing health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans. AHIP member companies offer medical expense insurance, long-term care insurance, disability income insurance, dental insurance, supplemental insurance, stop-loss insurance and reinsurance to consumers, employers, and public purchasers.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) protect and improve beneficiary health and satisfaction, foster appropriate and predictable payments and high quality care, promote understanding of CMS programs among beneficiaries, the health care community, and the public and strive to improve health for the well being of its beneficiaries.

Family Caregiving 101
The National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) and the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) joined together to create familycaregiving101.org as part of a national effort to provide resources to caregivers. The website is designed to provide caregivers with the basic tools, skills and information they need to protect their own physical and mental health while they provide high quality care for their loved one(s).

Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program
The Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program was designed specifically for members of the Federal Family. It is sponsored by the Federal Government and backed by two of the country's top insurance companies. The Federal Program is designed to help protect enrollees against the high costs of long term care. Personal access to registered nurse care coordinators, and home care provisions are just a few of the reasons why the Federal Program may be the smart choice for you.

Long-Term Care in South Dakota
The South Dakota Department of Social Services provides information available to citizens on long-term care eligibility requirements and what types of medical assistance programs are available.

National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)
The NAIC is the organization of insurance regulators for the 50 states. The state regulators' primary responsibility is to protect the interests of insurance consumers.

National Clearing House for Long-Term Care Information
This is a new web site developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide information and resources to help you and your family plan for future long-term care (LTC) needs. It provides a wide range of information and options to help you plan for future long-term care needs, but it can't tell you which ones will work best for you. Everyone's situation is different.

The National Clearinghouse for Long-Term Care Information is primarily intended as an information and planning resource for individuals who don't yet require long-term care, but it includes information on services and financing options that can be helpful to all individuals.

National Council on Aging (NCOA)

An association of organizations and individuals dedicated to promoting the well-being and continuing contributions of older persons through leadership, service, education and advocacy.

National Care Planning Council
The Council and those providers affiliated with them are dedicated to helping the American public plan for long-term care.

Senior Health Information and Insurance Education (SHIINE)
The Senior Health Information and Insurance Education Program will advocate for, inform, educate and assist consumers on Medicare and other related issues so they can make informed decisions and access resources to address their needs. The purpose of the SHIINE program is to educate Medicare beneficiaries and their families on Medicare and Medicare Advantage issues, as well as private health insurance policies like long-term care insurance and Medicare supplemental insurance. Information provided is free and confidential. SHIINE counselors can answer questions about benefits, help with complicated forms and provide referrals to the appropriate agencies.

South Dakota Division of Insurance
The South Dakota Division of Insurance provides citizens and businesses with fair and consistent regulation of the insurance industry.

State Health Insurance Program Long-Term Care Training
In conjunction with the "Own Your Future" Long-Term Care Awareness Campaign, CMS contracted with The Long-Term Care Group and Pullano, Mastrella and Lamb to develop training materials for the State Health Insurance Program counselors. These training materials, released in 2004, are organized into eight modules:

  • Module 3: Counseling Seniors on LTC Planning Issues
  • Module 4: Public Financing of LTC Services
